Giraffe - Tallest Mammal

Outfit Details:

Ladies, if you want to bring the men in, wear an animal themed sweater. I've found the secret.

There's something about a giraffe sweater that people simply cannot resist. I think I got more compliments on this kooky sweater than I ever have on anything else. I actually had a guy whistle at me. I was wearing a giraffe sweater and I got whistled at - which never happens in my normal life. The most I usually get is, "Hey you, move out of the way so I can see your hot friend!" True story. I like to think it's because I put out a cat-call-and-I'll-cut-you vibe. I also do not wear nearly enough giraffe sweaters.

Man-magnetism aside, my friend Vanessa's comment was the best of the day: "I think it's adorable. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing it, but it's adorable."

Clearly, she is just upset that it is vintage and therefore not readily available for her own closet. Her birthday is coming up...maybe I can track one down for her. A kitty themed one, perhaps?

p.s. If you know where my title is from, you are a winner (of nothing tangible, but you're still a winner).

DVF

A group of us (Christine, Lindsey, Helena, Tess and myself) were invited (by Refinery29) to the DVF SoHo store for a little dress up time. We each had to showcase and create an outfit around a particular pair of shoes. Be sure to check out how all of the ladies styled themselves and vote for your favorite. The winner will get to keep their head to toe ensemble, which I'm pretty sure none of us were aware of. We just thought we were having a good time. Good luck to all of the ladies who participated!

dvf

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Diane Von Furstendburg took some flack for the s/s '08 campaign, which featured Natalia Vodianova shot and illustrated by French photog François-Marie Banier. The illustrations and vibrant hues obstruct what should be the main focus of the ad- the clothes. Personally, I think it is the artistry that really commands the attention of the viewer and adds an element of intrigue. Plus, anyone familiar with the DVF aesthetic knows bright color and bold prints are always incorporated into her designs.

We're at that strange point in the season when it's warming up just enough to entertain the idea of shorts, but only if you have a thick sweater/cape/blanket to bundle up with. I'm not complaining; I am thrilled with the impending increase in temperatures. In fact, I've been doing a little bit of spring cleaning in my closet, slowly packing away the winter gear and making room for the rest. I don't know why I'm surprised by this at all, but I've come to a realization: I have way too much stuff. You would be shocked if you saw the amount of clothing I donate/took to Beacon's - and yet I still can't fit everything in my closet(s). I also have way too many things I don't need - trinkets, books I've already read and probably won't read again, coloring books (seriously) and old journals - and I'm having a way easier time getting rid of all of them. I'm getting there. I'm going to keep watching Hoarders until I'm scared straight.

little red

Outfit Details:
black ruffle dress (only $33!) - c/o Asian iCandy
vintage red cape - Dronning Vintage on Etsy
bag - c/o Coach (last year)
Cynthia Rowley fishnet stockings - Century 21
HUE over the knee socks - Nordstrom (similar ones here)
DVF Opal platforms - c/o DVF (from this shoot)
lipstick - MAC Dubonnet

Though the thrifting in NYC is dismal at best, I've always found a reliable friend in Etsy. I obviously have an affinity for capes, which has only grown over the years. It's like wearing a blanket, only it's more socially and fashionably acceptable to don outside of the house. I wear that camel-colored cape (my mom's dumpster diving find, I might add) with just about everything and needed more to put in rotation, so I turned to Shopbop for ideas. And then I saw the price tag and remembered why I usually shop their sale section or merely save the pictures for inspiration...so, I went and found this one on Etsy. It's completely different from the one I was envisioning, but you know what? I think I like it even more.

p.s. See how I originally styled my shoes here, at the DVF shoot (along with my friends)! Please take a second to vote for your favorite look:)
