a family that eats crab together, stays together

you know when you're gearing up for snowboarding day and you get up super early and it's barely dawn and the air is crisp and you head over to the local coffee spot to get your caffeine fix for the long drive ahead and there's that one dude that's relaxing reading the newspaper and having his morning cup on the franchise interior Levitz quality sofa and it's 5:30 am and you're like what the hell is that dude doing at this hour? well that's my dad. which means i roll my ass out of bed at 7:30am and put on whatever my half-open eyes can spot for family day. our brood is super big on eating so family day usually consists of non-stop gorging. on this particular weekend, we decided to take advantage of the awesome weather and head to redondo beach - a special spot where we've always bonded over crab and beer. you gotta forego the restaurants and head to the open market. i'm a pretty gnarly germophobe and if anyone knows me i'm always organizing and always have wetnaps handy, but redondo is the one spot where i throw ocd to the wind and dig in.

went with the super meaty dungeoness crab, picked live straight from the tank

which gets steamed and turned into this. you throw down newspaper on the picnic tables, rent mallets and get busy crackin (pun intended).

i know it looks like a mess but it's crazy good and super authentic.

my dad's not a fan of the ex korean president. he took to expressing himself with the tapatio.

gotta end with a fat churro. maybe next time funnel cake?
